A Day To Remember

For Memorial Day weekend this year, we decided to go out for some local fun that we have yet to experience, somehow, since moving to the Austin area.  Warning, lots of pictures ahead.  I have problems with minimalism, okay?

Zilker Park!  We started with the Zilker Zephyr train.

We arrived about 9:30 to get in line for the first train.  Tickets go on sale at 10:00 and the first ride is at 10:15.  When the first train leaves, you can join the line in hopes of getting tickets for the next train, leaving 30 minutes later.  I document this not because anyone cares, but so I'll remember for next time.  You don't want to arrive with a train-obsessed child only to realize you'll have to wait all day to get on the train.

Killing some time at the playground.

All aboard!

Off we go!

I think this was the loveliest train ride, by far, that we've ever taken!  The park is beautiful and riding along the blue-green Colorado river is awesome.

Random man playing guitar and harmonica along the train track.

After saying good-bye to the train, we headed across to Barton Springs Pool, a dammed-up part of the river fed by a very cold spring :)

Like his mother, not overly fond of getting into cold water. ;)

We stuck to the shallow end and just waded, more than swam.  It was cold!  But that didn't stop a lot of people from jumping off the diving board and even some who appeared to be training for a race.

And last, but not least, we headed over to 1st Street to eat fried avocado tacos out of a trailer.  Torchy's is pretty incredible :)

It was a great Memorial Day weekend!

Great photo-story. It's delightful to see families sharing life experiences and making good memories.
